Beautiful Bird – Memory EP
Beautiful Bird’s EP release Memory presents three soundscapes exploring the power of personal memory to form identity, from remembrances of isolation and loss to personal liberation and freedom. The EP was recorded as a series of live tracks in November 2008 at Loveland Studios in Tucson, Arizona, engineered by Nathan Sabatino, in order to capture the organic improvisational aspect of Beautiful Bird’s live performance.

Beautiful Bird combines traditional instruments with ambient electronica, driven by the lead voices of viola (Vicki Brown), theremin, trumpet (Noah Thomas) and the vocals of Kelly Michaelis. With minimalist piano accompaniment, song structures are open and offer the chance to explore the multiple sonic textures possible from this unusual instrumentation. Each track evolves by the layering of tones and textures, from deep drones to the crunch of electricity, held together by vocal statements delivered in the style of Nina Simone.
